First Second Books is the Studio Ghibli of the publishing world.

Let me explain. Ghibli films are notorious for their strong female leads. Princess Mononoke, Castle in the SkySpirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, The Cat Returns . . . with few exceptions, almost the entire Ghibli catalog centers on brave, independent, fearless female characters. It’s one of the reasons why those films are so great.

When it comes to graphic novels, First Second has been developing the same reputation. Strong, vibrant, diverse, multilayered female characters either lead or feature prominently in a growing number of books.

And it’s most certainly a model that other major publishers would do well to emulate.

Over the years, First Second hasn’t been shy about celebrating “girl power” in the pages of its books. It’s been home to Faith Erin Hicks’s Nameless City trilogy, Jillian and Mariko Tamaki’s multiple award-winning This One Summer, Tony Cliff’s Delilah Dirk series, and Ben Hatke’s Zita the Spacegirl trilogy. It’s also been a great home for female creators to tell their stories.

In short, it’s one of the best graphic novel publishers around.

(Shameless plug time. Check out my conversations with Faith Erin Hicks, Mariko Tamaki, and Tony Cliff to hear more about their books and why representation matters. You might also want to check out this adorable video with Ben Hatke where the little Roarbot asks why he always writes about girls.)

But First Second isn’t resting on its laurels and back catalog. There are oodles of new releases and books on the horizon that continue the trend for which they are justifiably well known.

Full reviews will be coming for all of these titles, but for now, do yourself a favor and pick up one (or all) of them for your collection – or as a gift for the readers in your life. There is no surer way to make someone’s day than by gifting them a First Second book. (Be sure to read all the way to the end for an awesome surprise.)

Monsters Beware! (Jorge Aguirre and Rafael Rosado) is the third entry in the utterly charming Chronicles of Claudette series. Aguirre and Rosado have created an unexpected hero in Claudette who gives new meaning to the term scrappy and was an instant favorite here at Roarbots HQ. The previous books are Giants Beware! and Dragons Beware!, and all three focus on themes of defying expectations and forming strong friendships. Oh yeah, and fighting fantastic creatures.

Scarlett Hart, Monster Hunter (Marcus Sedgwick and Thomas Taylor) is also about girls fighting monsters. Because why not? The world needs more of that, so bring it on. Set in the Victorian era, the story follows Scarlett Hart, an unlicensed monster hunter just trying to prove herself in a world designed to keep her docile and complacent. Needless to say, she’s not down with that.

Cucumber Quest (Gigi D.G.) began in 2011 as a webcomic and recently made the jump to graphic novel (the second volume is out now, and the third is on its way soon). The conceit is simple enough. It’s about bunny kids going on adventures and having fun. You want to read it already, don’t you? The story centers on nerdy wizard Cucumber and sassy, swashbuckling Almond who will constantly remind you that, yes, girls can do anything.

The City on the Other Side (Mairghread Scott and Robin Robinson) is a historical adventure about a girl who accidentally slips between early 20th century San Francisco and a war-torn fairyland. Isabel, a young Hispanic “woman of breeding” is expected to stay quiet, clean, and out of trouble. Except her heart is elsewhere. She yearns to see the city if not the world. And the true adventure of her life begins when she finds herself at the heart of a war between two fairy kingdoms.

Star Scouts (Mike Lawrence) is a girl scout adventure in outer space! The first book was one of the most pleasant surprises of last year, and the recently released sequel – The League of Lasers – doesn’t disappoint. The story centers on Avani, a young girl of South Asian descent who longs for a scouting group that’s about fun and adventure (not boys and makeovers). She gets her wish after she gets swept up by a pack of colorful aliens and the star scouts.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Be Prepared, The Prince and the Dressmaker, Real Friends, Pigs Might Fly, and Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World are all recent First Second releases that celebrate girl power in their own way.

Now, remember what I said about making someone’s day? I’m about to make yours. How would you like to win all five of these books? Of course you would. All you have to do is go on Twitter or Facebook, share you favorite “girl power” book (it doesn’t need to be published by First Second), and tag both The Roarbots (@theroarbots) and First Second (@01FirstSecond). I’ll pick a winner at random.

Good luck!

  1. I love First Second too! As you said, they do a great job of publishing both female comics creators AND publishing books w/strong female protagonists. I also just appreciate how *nice* their books for kids are – it’s great to see the high production value!
