(previous interviews in this series can be found here.) Welcome to another installment of 5 Questions with a 5-Year-Old. Today, Zoey chats with Andy Runton, creator of the Owly comics. If you’re not familiar with the Owly books….first of all, shame on you! Second of all, you’re in for a real treat. They’re a blast of adorable. They’re (mostly) wordless graphic novels that focus on a little owl with huge eyes and the adventures he has with his friends–mostly his friend Wormy. The stories rely on expressions and symbols for the narrative, which make them absolutely perfect for the youngest readers. They are heartfelt and touching and all focus on the importance of friendship, feelings, and being kind to others. There are currently five undersized black-and-white graphic novels (put out by both Andy and Top Shelf) that form the heart of Owly’s world. There are also two oversized color picture books (put out by Simon & Schuster). All are independent of one another and can be a perfect place to start. And because there are no words, the youngest readers can “read” the books by themselves. As Zoey says in her interview, she’s able to read the books to her younger brother and stuffed animals. In short, the Owly books are nearly perfect kids comics. As always, all questions are Zoey’s. I simply prompt her with “clue words” so she can remember. (Make sure you turn on subtitles if you can’t make out Zoey’s questions.) Thanks so much to Andy Runton for taking the time to chat with Zoey! You Might Also Like...
