(previous interviews in this series can be found here.) Welcome to another installment of 5 Questions with a 5-Year-Old. Today, Zoey chats with Jeffrey Brown, writer and artist on the adorable Darth Vader and Son, Vader’s Little Princess, Goodnight Darth Vader, and the Jedi Academy books. We first became aware of Jeffrey Brown in 2012 when Darth Vader and Son was released by Chronicle Books. I got a copy for Father’s Day and instantly fell in love. Zoey instantly fell in love, too, though she loved the art and the fact that Luke and Leia were tiny and cute. She hadn’t seen the movies at that point, so some of the jokes went right over her head. But, she still laughed. Vader’s Little Princess came out in 2013, and I had another Father’s Day gift. Then, just a few weeks ago, Goodnight Darth Vader had Vader telling Luke and Leia a bedtime story. It’s a little prequel heavy, but it’s adorable nonetheless. Now, Brown is hard at work on the Jedi Academy series from Scholastic. These books are middle grade graphic novel “hybrids”–meaning they are part comic, part traditional book. They follow young Padawan Roan as he attends the Jedi Academy. The presentation is also somewhat unique in that one page might be a journal entry, another might be a letter from Roan’s parents, and yet another could be an e-mail from Yoda. Taken together, they tell the whole story and add to many of the gags. Zoey had a chance to chat with Jeffrey Brown at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC, where Brown was promoting both Goodnight Darth Vader and the second Jedi Academy book, Return of the Padawan. As always, all questions are Zoey’s. I simply prompt her with “clue words” so she can remember. (Make sure you turn on subtitles if you can’t make out Zoey’s questions.) Thank you very much to Jeffrey Brown for taking the time to chat with Zoey and to Sheila Marie Everett at Scholastic for helping to arrange the interview. You Might Also Like...
