MICKEY MOUSE - "Over the Moon" (Disney Channel) Let’s get this out of the way right now. “Over the Moon” features the longest ever on-screen kiss between Mickey and Minnie. (I could be mistaken since I honestly didn’t do the research, but let’s just go with it, OK?) The current series of Mickey Mouse shorts (developed and produced by Paul Rudish) seems to evoke a love-it-or-hate-it response among Disney fans. On the one hand, the shorts feature the classic gang of characters in a non-preschool format, which is certainly welcome for those of us who love Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and all the rest. On the other hand, the animation style and humor are strongly reminiscent of Ren & Stimpy. Which isn’t necessarily bad (I love Ren & Stimpy), it’s just incredibly jarring with these characters. When the shorts first premiered online in 2013, it was somewhat surprising that Disney – who held Mickey Mouse, especially, very close to the chest – would allow their marquee characters to be portrayed in this way. But the show has survived and is currently in its fifth season (with more than 90 episodes)! And this weekend sees the release of a brand-new short, “Over the Moon.” (It premieres Saturday, May 4, at 8:25 AM on Disney Channel and in the DisneyNOW app.) The cartoon opens on Mickey and Minnie, who are just wrapping up a quaint evening picnic and about to head home after a quick kiss when the moon interrupts and takes them on a worldwide, whirlwind tour in search of the most romantic spot for that kiss. The moon, however, is kind of a pervy sleaze and very much a voyeur. (Just watch the clip below.) And Mickey and Minnie are less-than-willing companions on this round-the-world trip, which brings them to Paris, Japan, and the northern lights. Ultimately, the solution to their problem is to give in and smooch. For a really, really, REALLY long time. I wasn’t kidding about this historical mouse kiss. I’d be lying if I said it’s not a cute short. It’s always fun to see Mickey and Minnie, and the delightful Russi Taylor always brings such vibrancy and warmth to Minnie. Anyway, check out the clip below and watch the full thing when it premieres this weekend. You Might Also Like...
