Mother’s Day is upon us once again. And though we shouldn’t concentrate all of our praise and adoration for the mothers in our lives to a single day, the reality is that moms are often drowning in flowers, chocolates, and breakfasts in bed every second Sunday in May.

So if you or your little ones are going to gift something to deal ol’ mom this year, might I make a cute suggestion?

If you’re looking for a last-minute way to say, “You’re my superhero!” then look no further than Superhero Mom (written by Timothy Knapman, illustrated by Joe Berger, and published by Nosy Crow). The book is a companion and follow-up to Superhero Dad, which came out a few years ago.

Both books are super cute and fun to read aloud. Whereas Superhero Dad focuses on a dad and his son, Superhero Mom features a mom and her daughter. So do note that neither book is “gender neutral,” and Superhero Mom might not make the perfect gift for the mother of a son.

But each book carries the same message: parents are true superheroes because of the seemingly “simple” things they do every day.

I mean, sure, it’s kind of a sad statement on modern society that making pancakes, playing at the playground, and brushing hair are all considered superhero traits, but here we are. In an era when it’s all too easy to drown in social media notifications, work responsibilities, and horrific current events, those are precisely the types of “family togetherness” activities that get forgotten.

And yet, even when those basic things aren’t neglected, parents so seldomly receive the recognition they deserve – especially from kids (who often see their parents as personal servants at their beck and call). So it’s great to see a book that celebrates mom for being present, involved, and loving.

Pick up Superhero Mom for mom for Mother’s Day… or any of the other 364 days of the year that she’s a superhero.
