LEGO has been taking some risks lately, and for the most part, it’s been paying off. Their crowdsourced LEGO Ideas line has been stellar, with almost every set selling out and becoming massively popular. And the new LEGO Hidden Side theme utilizes AR tech so kids can get digitally interactive with their toys and make ghosts come alive (review coming soon!).

But today sees the launch of the brand-new LEGO Originals line, which brings the company back to its roots. Founded in 1932 by master carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the first LEGO toys were crafted from wood, and it wasn’t until the onset of WWII, rationing, a scarcity of wood, and a boom in plastic production that LEGO toys shifted over to the plastic we all know and love today.

So it makes sense that the first product in this back-to-their-roots LEGO Originals line is an upscaled wooden minifigure. This 5:1 figure (Product #853967) measures over 7″ (20 cm) tall, 4″ (11 cm) wide, and 3.5″ (9 cm) deep. It’s handcrafted in FSC-certified oak and comes with adjustable yellow plastic hands. The last LEGO toy to combine plastic and wood was the 1130 Bedford firetruck in 1959.

Do note, though, that this is intended to be a “premium” item and as such will carry a “premium” price tag. It retails for $119.99 USD (and comes with a 28-page book featuring the history of the LEGO minifigure), but the creative possibilities are endless. You can leave it as is and set it up as a beautiful display piece…

On top of the booklet and figure itself, the set also comes with a collection of 29 various LEGO bricks, so you can use those (or the thousands of bricks you undoubtedly have lying around) to get slightly creative…
