(previous interviews in this series can be found here.) Welcome to another installment of 5 Questions with a 5-Year-Old. Today, Zoey chats with the one and only Abby Cadabby, Sesame Street’s resident fairy-in-training. Be sure to also check out Zoey’s chat with the woman behind the voice, Leslie Carrara-Rudolph! Believe it or not, Sesame Street has been on the air for 45 incredible years. It’s one of the few pieces of popular culture that has truly stood the test of time and become a touchstone for several generations. I grew up with it, and my children are growing up with it. When you think about it, that’s amazing. Abby Cadabby debuted on the show in 2006, so she’s one of the newest characters to move in. She was the first major female character in more than a decade, and her enthusiastic personality made her an almost instant hit. Abby toys, dolls, and fairy wands were soon everywhere. She’s also one of the few puppet characters who has a unique personal story that’s explored. Her parents are divorced, so she’s often employed to discuss divorce and other family issues that affect kids. Just four years after her debut, she was given her own CGI segment on the show: Abby’s Flying Fairy School. (Compare that to the immensely popular Elmo, who waited about 14 years for his own Elmo’s World segment.) Zoey had a chance to chat with Abby at this year’s New York Comic-Con, where the fairy flew in to sit on a Sesame Street panel. I have to say that this was not Zoey’s first time meeting Abby. When she was a mere 8 months old, we took her to a special event for the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. Just out of frame in this shot are Leslie Carrara-Rudolph (Abby), Fran Brill (Zoe), and Kevin Clash (Elmo). Enjoy the silliness…. As always, all questions are Zoey’s. I simply prompt her with “clue words” so she can remember. (Make sure you turn on subtitles if you can’t make out Zoey’s questions.) Thanks so much to Abby Cadabby and Leslie Carrara-Rudolph for taking the time to chat with Zoey. Thanks also to Ellen Lewis and Jodi Lefkowitz at Sesame Workshop for helping to arrange the interview!
