Star Trek: Discovery is back at last with another season. A big promise was made in the first episode of Season 3. Before we get to that, though, an introduction to this article series. Each week, we will briefly recap – with as few spoilers as possible – react to, and ruminate about the theme of each episode. Because episodes drop on different days depending on country, these posts will be published each Monday to give people a couple of days to watch. Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 1: “That Hope Is You” Recap Burnham successfully makes it through the wormhole, but she doesn’t arrive where expected. She is flung far into the future, nearly 1,000 years into the future. The Discovery is nowhere to be found. She meets someone new: Book and his cat Grudge. Book quickly catches her up on some of the things she missed in the last millennium, such as the collapse of Starfleet and most dilithium in existence exploding. There is some action that works to build the world and create a more trusting relationship between Burnham and Book. Book introduces Burnham to Aditya Sahil: A true believer keeping the hope of Starfleet alive. Next up on their list: Find the Discovery and her crew. Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 1: “That Hope Is You” Reactions I have to admit, there isn’t a lot I can react to in this episode other than being happy that another season of Star Trek: Discovery is back and that production on Season 4 is starting soon. When you have a show jump nearly 1,000 years into the future, “That Hope Is You” handles a whole lot of worldbuilding. This is a whole new era in the Star Trek universe, and a lot has changed. I am happy they found a good balance of showing and telling viewers a lot of information needed to be grounded in this period. Obviously, a lot more is still needed. Ultimately, this episode left us with more questions than answers. The biggest of which is where is the Discovery? Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 1: “That Hope Is You” Ruminations Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery was a lot about betrayal and trauma. Season 2 dealt with working through that trauma and rediscovering yourself and others. Season 3 is promising us some much-needed hope. The world is a little bit off kilter now, to say the least. Between a pandemic and political turmoil around the globe, it’s difficult to keep hope. People have stopped believing in one another. People have stopped trusting. The world is on edge and living through a collective trauma. However, like Aditya Sahil, there are hope-bearers in this world – those who keep the flame alive against all odds. To rephrase Mr. Rogers, we need to find the hope-bearers. What did you think of “That Hope Is You”? Are you ready to have hope? You Might Also Like...
