Previously, when we’ve talked about toys, we’ve covered some amazing TINY toys, such as Funko’s Warner Bros and Disney Afternoon Mystery Minis. Or the Mega Man Pint Size Heroes. Or adorable Studio Ghibli plushies.

Today, we’re going big. Like, really big.

The Hot Wheels Super Ultimate Garage is hands down the biggest toy in our house. And it’ll almost certainly be the biggest toy in YOUR house, too, so make sure you have room for it.

It stands 3.5 feet tall, requires a 2′ x 4′ footprint on the floor, and has enough room to store 140 Hot Wheels cars. It’s massive. And for the little Hot Wheels fan in your life? It’s an absolute dream toy.

I mean, just look at the box it comes in (6-year-old for scale)…

Assembly on this thing takes a while, so make sure you set aside at least 45 minutes to an hour to get it all put together. The upside is that the instructions are fairly straightforward, and most of the pieces are large. So it’s not like you have to go hunting for little pieces like in a LEGO set.

Everything snaps together, which you might think makes it unstable or wobbly once it finally reaches 3.5 feet tall. Not so. The pieces are large, thick, and well made. and the base is roughly 3 feet by 4 feet. So once it’s all together, it’s actually quite stable and safe. It would take a lot for the garage to “accidentally” fall over.

Once it’s finally assembled, the Super Ultimate Garage is six levels high and features:

• parking for 140 Hot Wheels (or similarly sized) cars
• a motorized elevator to bring cars from bottom to top
• a car wash on Level 5
• a jet parked on the roof that can hold a couple cars and detach
• police station spots where cars can be “locked up”
• ramps leading down from every level
• dual racing tracks from the roof to the base (so you can race two cars down)
• a huge gorilla that climbs up the elevator while it’s turned on
• four Hot Wheels cars

And if this thing isn’t already big enough for you, it’s extendable! There are six spots around the base where you can slide in more Hot Wheels track. Simply slide in your own track and connect the garage to any other playsets, track sets, or stunt sets you might already have.

It’s super easy to create a Hot Wheels city!

Despite how awesome this thing is, I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention the few negatives the garage has. Fair warning – most of our gripes are about the elevator. The motorized elevator requires FOUR D batteries, which seems excessive. And they’re not included. And when the elevator is on, it’s loud. Annoyingly so. Not only that, but it doesn’t seem to work very well.

It’s supposed to catch cars and rotate them up the elevator to the different levels. Some cars, especially those that are a bit longer than “standard” cars, get jammed. And it’s not easy to get them out once that happens.

Also, we fail to see the point of the huge gorilla. It climbs to the top while the elevator is running, pretending to swat at and grab the cars, and after it reaches the top, it crashes down to the bottom. Loud. Obnoxious.

Needless to say, the elevator doesn’t see much use.

I should also mention the price. The Super Ultimate Garage retails for $200, which – I don’t need to tell you – is a lot. This is not an impulse buy. This is a special gift for a birthday or Christmas or the like.

With all that in mind, I should point out that Mattel also makes the Ultimate Garage (or at least they used to; it might be discontinued), which is essentially a smaller version of this playset. It’s slightly less “super,” meaning it comes without the motorized elevator, gorilla, and price tag. However, it might be an option worth considering.

But is the Super Ultimate Garage worth it? This massive playset has been a big hit at Roarbots HQ. Our resident Hot Wheels fanatic is in love with it. We’ve had it for a few months now, and as every parent knows, that’s really one of the true benchmarks of a popular toy.

Far too many toys are abandoned after only a few days (or hours) of play. This garage still gets plenty of play after several months, and THAT – to me – is the biggest signal that it’s a winner.
