If you’re a fan of Kate DiCamillo (and who isn’t?), then you’re no doubt also a fan of lovable pig Mercy Watson. I mean, who doesn’t love a pig with an obsession for toast with a great deal of butter on it? No one. That’s who. Mercy Watson began as a series of six beginning chapter books (for the 5-8 crowd). And if you haven’t read them, you need to get on that. They’re adorable and hilarious. Mercy’s world then expanded with four books (so far) for older readers in the Tales from Deckawoo Drive series, all of which focus on the adults in her porcine orbit. And now? Now the youngest readers (and listeners) are treated to Mercy’s origin story in picture book form with the enchanting A Piglet Named Mercy. Mr. Watson and Mrs. Watson live ordinary lives. Sometimes their lives feel a bit too ordinary. Sometimes they wish something different would happen. And one day it does, when a tiny piglet arrives, bringing love (and chaos) to Deckawoo Drive. A Piglet Named Mercy is once again illustrated by the amazing Chris Van Dusen, and the larger trim size of the book truly allows his art to shine. And this unpredictable story about how Mercy was named and ended up with the Watsons is a perfect addition to your picture book (and Kate DiCamillo) library. Do check out my conversation with Kate over here, where we talk about perseverance and determination in the face of rejection, the expectations that come with awards and critical acclaim, her writing regimen, how writing maintains her sanity, and her utterly incredible character names (and where they come from).
