Witness the Birth and Evolution of a Genius: Three Early Makoto Shinkai Films Land on Blu-ray June 16, 2022
You should know this by now, but Fathom Events and GKIDS have been quietly saving 2019 with Studio Ghibli Fest. From April through December, Studio Ghibli Fest 2019 has been presenting nine of the studio’s best and most beloved films on the big screen – where they absolutely deserve to be seen. Sadly, we’re at the penultimate film in the series. But man oh man are they ever great ones – and so different! To round out November and help celebrate Thanksgiving, Ghibli Fest offers up the one and only Princess Mononoke. The film originally released in Japan in 1997, but it wasn’t until 1999 that it released here in the States. (Check out our review of the recent collector’s edition Blu-ray release of the film from GKIDS and Shout! Factory.) Typically, we recommend watching these films in their original Japanese, but Princess Mononoke is tricky. For the English dub, Neil Gaiman adapted the script, and the cast includes Claire Danes, Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton. Whichever version you choose, just make sure you DO choose. If you’ve never seen it on the big screen, NOW is your chance! Thanks to Fathom Events and the Ghibli Fest, the film will have three screenings, so don’t miss it: November 17 and 20 (English dub) and November 18 (English subtitles). Check showtimes and theaters, and buy tickets here. And here’s the fun part. As we’ve done for all nine entries in this year’s Studio Ghibli Fest, we have a pair of tickets for one lucky Roarbots reader! The tickets will be good for one AMC or Regal theater of your choice (that’s showing the film, obviously), so check here for convenient theaters. This giveaway is now over. Thanks for entering!
