Captain Jack Harkness is back. John Barrowman is back. Colin Baker is back. The Lives of Captain Jack, Volume Two, from Big Finish Productions is like a candy-coated gift you didn’t know you needed. I mean, I could just stop there. I shouldn’t have to keep selling this to you. Alas. I’ll admit that I first fell into the world of Doctor Who with the reboot version. I never watched the show as a kid, when the first six doctors were on endless repeat on PBS. (I’ve since gone back and embarked on a complete watchthrough of the classic series.) I’ll also admit that I fell in love with John Barrowman and his character Captain Jack from his first appearance… so much so that I stopped watching Doctor Who in favor of Torchwood – and couldn’t get enough. Come on, Torchwood had Jack Harkness AND Martha Jones! It doesn’t get any better than that. But I digress. Wait, I lied. One more admission. This past weekend, I was fortunate to attend my very first John Barrowman panel at Awesome Con in Washington, DC. I’ve heard the stories. I’ve heard tales of his legendary panels. I often thought they were just hyperbole. It’s true. All of it. In person, John Barrowman is… a lot. Like, a LOT. But in the best possible way. He’s a pure and utter delight. So this announcement from Big Finish Productions landed in my inbox and was met with more than the usual excitement. If you’re unfamiliar with Big Finish, they’re doing the (Time) Lord’s work in exponentially expanding the world of Doctor Who. Over the years, they’ve put out hundreds of original audiobooks and full-cast dramatizations across all 13 doctors and often starring the original actors. Barrowman is certainly no stranger to these productions (and actually hinted at his Awesome Con appearance that he’s planning to explore Jack’s transformation into the Face of Boe in a future audioplay). But in this new release, he shares top billing with the Sixth Doctor himself, Colin Baker (and his notoriously vibrant coat, apparently). In The Lives of Captain Jack, Volume Two, Captain Jack takes on fake news, trench warfare, and the Sixth Doctor’s dress sense in three new stories: Piece of Mind by James Goss: When the Sixth Doctor falls dying into his arms, Jack must carry on in his place. Is the universe ready for a whole new kind of Doctor? What Have I Done? by Guy Adams: On the battlefields of World War I, something is hunting in the trenches. Jack must try and save the life of a wounded soldier. Driving Miss Wells by James Goss: Alien invasions, stolen planets, and burning skies – Newsreader Trinity Wells used to tell everyone the world was ending. One day, she stopped believing it. Will her new chauffeur change her mind? The new set comes out in June and is available for preorder now (both digitally and on CD). If you’re interested, you might want to go ahead and preorder since it’s available at a discounted price. The price will go up once it’s released. You Might Also Like...
