Witness the Birth and Evolution of a Genius: Three Early Makoto Shinkai Films Land on Blu-ray June 16, 2022
ShareTweet 0 We’ve already covered Promare as part of our GKIDS retrospective, so if you’re interested in our thoughts on the film itself, click on over to that post. In short, even though it’s frenetic, overwrought, exaggerated, full of cheesy dialogue, violent, and full of screams and explosions… it also delivers an incredibly timely message about human rights and a more-than-subtext queer relationship between the two leads. Ultimately, Promare is a lot of fun… as long as you know what to expect. And, clearly, a LOT of people love this movie. It’s currently sitting at a ridiculous 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it had a phenomenally successful theatrical run. Remember when those were a thing? The film has been available on digital and Blu-ray since May, but out today from Shout! Factory and GKIDS is a collector’s edition set that just might hit the sweet spot for superfans of either Promare or Studio TRIGGER (Little Witch Academia, B.N.A.)… or both! The Blu-ray disc is the same that comes in the bare-bones release, so you’re getting all the special features from that: Interview with director Hiroyuki Imaishi Studio TRIGGER Roundtable featurette Side: Galo and Side: Lio short films (in both Japanese and English) Featurette on the English dub cast Trailers But what makes the collector’s edition special is the packaging and additional features exclusive to this set. Packed inside the slipcase are all sorts of goodies, including: 52-page booklet detailing the story and characters, with some making-of information, and featuring interviews with several of the filmmakers 126-page book with the entire final draft of the English script 13″ x 16″ mini-poster Decal sticker with the Prome Polis logo Original soundtrack CD (composed by Hiroyuki Sawano) If you’re a fan of the film and, for some reason, didn’t already pick up the Blu-ray release, this is a no-brainer. I’m not usually a sucker for “gimmicky” features like mini-posters, stickers, and decals, but the CD soundtrack and two booklets are really nice additions. If you haven’t seen the film? Tough call. I mean, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but how can you resist a film described as a “hyperkinetic, candy-colored visual masterpiece”? You can’t. You Might Also Like...
