New VR game Audica promo image

Forget Beat Saber, there’s a new virtual reality rhythm game in town. Harmonix, the same company that brought you Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Dropmix are debuting a new rhythm game for VR. Mixing music gameplay with precision shooting, Audica will be arriving on Steam and the Oculus Store for early access March 7, 2019.

We love rhythm games already, but from what we can see, Audica reimagines what a rhythm game can be. Instead of notes or colored bars approaching the player in steady rhythmic succession, players in Audica are greeted with a full-frontal assault that they must defend themselves against using the VR controllers as guns. The project has actually been in development for some time and seems to have evolved from a previous Harmonix project called Chroma that was announced back in 2014 (check out the Chroma announcement trailer here). Check out Audica’s advertised gameplay in the preview video below.

Harmonix describes the game:

Armed with a pair of rhythm blasters, players step into Audica’s mesmerizing cosmic arena and shoot and smash targets to the beat of a hand-authored song. A flawless run with precise timing, accuracy and form will earn players one of the coveted spots on Audica’s global leaderboards.

The early access version will come with 10 playable songs, but the full version released later in the year will arrive with 25+. The early access debut price will be $19.99. Follow Harmonix on Twitter for the latest Audica information.
