Another February, another Toy Fair New York. This year was a bit of a whirlwind for me, and I actually had a different focus than in years past. That meant I got to chat with a lot of different companies and learn about a lot of great new products – many of which I’ll focus on over the next few months both here and at GeekDad. But I still made time to visit some of my favorite booths. And today, I’m here to help with a walkthrough of the Playmates booth. In previous years, Playmates has been all about the Ninja Turtles – almost to the detriment of everything else. Their booth was very green. But not so this year! In addition to a very healthy TMNT line, Playmates has also added Ben 10 (for the newly rebooted show), Voltron: Legendary Defender, and the upcoming Nickelodeon show Mysticons. (Click on all photos below to launch a full-size gallery.) Ben 10 To support the relaunched Ben 10 on Cartoon Network, Playmates will introduce basic, deluxe, and giant figures; a vehicle playset; two different versions of the Omnitrix; and additional role-play in the fall of this year. Key highlights include the basic action figure assortment, which features Ben Tennyson, the 10 different heroic aliens he transforms into, and key villains from the show. Figures range in height up to 5″ tall, and each also comes equipped with themed accessories. The Rustbucket vehicle and playset is a vehicle that transforms into a three-level playset that stands over two feet tall and is packed with features including an alien transformation chamber, plasma blaster, alien lab, and more. Voltron: Legendary Defender The real highlight of the booth for me were the Voltron toys. My kids (and I) are obsessed with the new DreamWorks/Netflix show, and the new toys are frankly all kinds of awesome. Wave 1 is in stores now, including eight basic action figures, five Legendary lions that combine to form a 16″ Voltron, and an ultimate 14″ electronic Voltron. Plus, we got a peek at the upcoming Wave 2, which includes die-cast vehicles and all of the paladins for the basic line! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Finally, most of the Playmates booth was devoted to the Turtles. The 2017 collection includes a new Micro Mutants segment, additions to the basic figure assortment based on season 5 of the Nickelodeon TV show, all-new customizable role-play items, and more. Personally, I’m partial to the way-cool samurai-inspired figures…even if there is an inherent contradiction in having Samurai Ninja Turtles. Mysticons Unfortunately, we were unable to take pictures of the toys for Nickelodeon’s upcoming Mysticons. Scheduled to release much later in the year, they’re definitely something to keep your eyes on. In the meantime, enjoy this preview of what the show will look like, and  try to control your excitement. You Might Also Like...
