Animation Roarbots Sneak Peek: ‘Justice League Dark: Apokolips War’ By S.W. Sondheimer March 10, 2020 ShareTweet 0 It isn’t often the Justice League needs a bail out. Then again, it isn’t every day they’re up against a god. With Earth at risk, the unlikely trio of Superman (Jerry O’Connell), John Constantine (Matt Ryan), and Raven (Taissa Farmiga) have to figure out how to work together to lead the remaining members of the Justice League, Teen Titans, Suicide Squad, and other solo heroes on what could very likely be their last mission: defeat Darkseid and save the planet. Yes, it’s animated, but Justice League Dark: Apokolips War isn’t a cartoon for the kiddos. It is, in fact, rated R, and I can assure you, having watched most of the DC animated films, if it has an adult rating, it’s earned it. Previous rated R films have featured blood and violence, a transformation sequence where someone (usually Starfire) is at least briefly naked for no apparent reason, and heavily implied bedroom (or floor or kitchen counter or rooftop) shenanigans. I’m a little bummed we aren’t getting the full magic squad of Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and Black Orchid. Etrigan is likely out of the game due to Jason Blood’s demise. That said, Constantine, even on his own, is a chaos bomb of epic proportions – and friends, is he going to drives Supes nuts. Also, vis a vis Constantine, I will revel in any opportunity to enjoy Matt Ryan chewing the flames of Hell as the worst best friend a hero can have. Throwing Raven in the mix can only add to the demonic fun, and forcing the Suicide Squad to work with the Justice League is definitely going to be a good time. The hubs and I have a DC Universe subscription, so we usually wait for movies to pop up there but we were just talking about, perhaps, springing for the DVD on this one because there are all sorts of fantastic special features. I’m particularly intrigued by the Adam Strange (not to be confused with Marvel’s Adam Warlock) DC Showcase Short. An archaeologist who fights monsters using “a jet pack and a ray gun,” Strange is the human champion of the planet Rann and has been a member of the Justice League, R.E.B.E.L.S., and Seven Soldiers of Victory. There’s also a new featurette on the history of Darkseid, a look back at the 2017 Justice League Dark animated feature, reissues of three Justice League Action episodes, and a preview of DC’s next animated feature, Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Justice League Dark: Apokolips War will be available May 5 on digital and May 19 on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD. You Might Also Like...
