Teen Titans is, surprisingly, 15 years old this year. That’s right; it premiered in 2003. It’s almost old enough to drive, but before we hand over the keys, it’s only fair the gang gets an upgrade. And right on cue, the complete first season of the landmark show is finally out on Blu-ray, thanks to Warner Archive. If you’re unfamiliar, Teen Titans follows the eponymously named superhero team composed of Robin, Beast Boy, Starfire, Cyborg, and Raven. The show ultimately ran for five seasons and 65 episodes and spawned the (decidedly different) sequel Teen Titans Go! I’ll be honest – I never watched the show when it was on TV. I was living abroad during almost all of the show’s initial run, and truthfully I wasn’t the target audience even then. This show skews young, and the first season especially appeals to elementary school age kids. Good thing I happen know two kids in that demographic. When the new Blu-ray of Season 1 showed up at my door, my kids were over the moon. They were already familiar with Teen Titans Go! and the characters, and they couldn’t wait to dive into this show. Thankfully, the disc arrived during winter break, because they binged all 13 episodes in about two days. Needless to say, it was a hit. After 15 years, the show still works and still fires on all cylinders. This is the first Blu-ray release for the show, which previously had DVD releases of all five seasons. The audio and video quality are top notch, and the episodes feel like they were made yesterday. The bonus features on the disc are identical to those found on the original DVD release, which is a bit disappointing, but it’s fun to watch the featurette on the voice actors since they all look so young! If you’re a fan of the show or are just learning about it now, there’s never been a better to time to dive in. I’m assuming Blu-ray releases of Seasons 2-5 are on the horizon (if this sells well), so don’t be shy! Besides, the Puffy Ami Yumi theme song is contagious as hell.
