Modern pop culture vs. classic. (Image: Hasbro) This past weekend, Hasbro had their press event concurrent with Toy Fair 2019. I was mainly interested in the Transformers reveals (of which there were a ton), but the company also impressed with surprises like the Star Wars Retro Collection. My favorite non-transforming reveals of the weekend were of the new Overwatch line and the “Totally 90s” Marvel figure reveals. Overwatch Cheers luv! You don’t have to pay $80-150 for good Overwatch figures anymore! Since Good Smile started making their amazing Overwatch Figma figures, I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed that another company would make a more budget-friendly version. Hasbro picking up the license is better than anything I could have hoped for. Don’t mind the chipper lass with the gun! Focus on the giant armored guy! (Image: Hasbro) The figures all have exquisite detailing, and their faces (when you can see them) look exactly like their character models. They’re hyper detailed and, even better, in scale! Each figure comes with multiple hands and weapons, with removable fire or energy blasts (a la Transformers War for Cybertron). Reinhardt is a prime example of this coming together perfectly. Not only is he a massive figure, he comes with a giant energy shield that you could easily fit a Tracer or Soldier 76 behind, just like in the game. Speaking of, Tracer and Soldier 76, in their base skins are two of my favorites from the initial wave. The Tracer figure perfectly captures the plucky charm of the character. Please make every last one of Phara’s armors, thanks. (Image: Hasbro) But running a very close second is the Mercy and Phara two-pack. Mercy looks perfect (though I think she has better skins than her standard) and Phara is amazing. Every detail of her armor is captured. My only wish is that she had detachable missiles so that you could recreate her “Justice rains from above!” ult. Don’t you think “Die, die, die” is a little harsh, Reyes? (Image: Hasbro) Additional figures in the first wave include Lucio, Ana (in her Shrike skin), Sombra, and Reaper (in his Blackwatch Reyes skin). There’s no doubt this is only the beginning. With 28 characters and over 330 skins, there’s easily enough material for Hasbro to keep making Overwatch figures for years to come. Marvel Speaking of properties with endless figures and decoes to choose from, Hasbro showcased a wide variety of Marvel figures, drawing on everything from Avengers: Infinity War to 90s X-Factor comics. From the movies, we’re getting a slew of figures that are looking more and more like the actors who play them. Hasbro must have the dwarf Eitri hidden somewhere amongst their manufacturing facilities, capturing likenesses and consigning them to plastic. LUIS! (Image: Hasbro) From the first Captain America movie, we’re finally getting Peggy Carter (now do her Exiles/Marvel Puzzle Quest Captain America costume, pretty please)! Additionally you’ll find Ghost and Luis (!) from Ant Man and the Wasp, a very impressive Shuri from Black Panther, and for all you Deadpool 2 fans, there’s a massive Colossus and Juggernaut 2-pack coming your way as well. Shake weight not included. (Image: Hasbro) Thor: Ragnarok is well represented with the Grandmaster and Korg, as well as Hela and Skurg. Beyond the movie tie-ins, however, what stood out for me was the hard lean into 90s nostalgia. So 90s, I can feel the hair gel. (Image: Hasbro) There’s Boom Boom and Cannonball from the original X-Force. And Dazzler in her unfortunate “I stole half of Gambit’s jacket to wear over my turtleneck” outfit. I came here to kick butt and chew gum…oh, wait, there’s some gum now. (Image: Hasbro) You can also snag Jubilee before she went and got herself a severe Vitamin D allergy (and while I would have appreciated a vampire head, I will gladly accept the included blowing bubble gum alternate). Blink in her original LARP getup. Forge in… whatever the hell that costume is supposed to be. Every bad fashion choice from 1990-1999 has come home to roost in the Fall waves and I’m loving it. It’s almost enough to make me want to swing back around and pick up an Archangel figure from Hasbro Pulse… if only they’d had enough courage to make his costume pink and blue like the original. One is from the recent comics. The other…is not. (Image: Hasbro) There’s also a really impressive Infamous Iron Man hitting the shelves this year, which makes me wish Hasbro would make a few more current costumes rather than raiding the back catalog. You can pick up the Marvel Legends nostalgia wave on preorder right now over at Hasbro Pulse. If you order anything by Saturday, you get a free Premier membership which gives you free shipping and exclusive deals. You Might Also Like...
