Even though we don’t have a single Marvel Studios blockbuster movie released this month to overshadow the rest the box office, there are still several movies that have seemingly slipped through the cracks. Similarly, we’re so awash in Blu-ray and DVD releases that it can be hard to see a diamond in the rough. In my Under the Radar series, we’ll look at movies that deserve a little more buzz. Here are some movies you may have missed for January 2019. In Theaters: West of Sunshine This Australian film received a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival for its gut-wrenching look at a father grasping for straws caring for his son while trying to pay back his gambling debt. You’ll find yourself wanting to shout at the characters on screen from them making such obviously bad choices, but undoubtedly, this fictional film shines a spotlight on the real-life struggles many face in the underbelly of society. West of Sunshine is being released theatrically on January 24 but is already available on demand right now and is distributed by UnCork’d Entertainment. The Kid Who Would Be King We’ve made no secret about our love for this family-friendly adventure movie. While it is getting a wide theatrical release on January 24, I feel the buzz on this movie is far less than it deserves. Perhaps perspective audiences aren’t keen on another retelling of the Arthurian legend, but trust us, just go see it! To quote our esteemed editor, “The Kid Who Would Be King…is what The Goonies would feel like if it were made in 2019 with a bigger budget and more realistic special effects.” Inspiring and idealistic, you won’t want to miss taking your family to this one. Releasing on Blu-ray/DVD Reign of the Supermen When the Death of Superman storyline hit comics in the ’90s, the entire fandom was rocked to its core. In the aftermath, four new Superman characters were introduced and left readers questioning who, if any, were the real Supes, and what would happen to Clark Kent/Superman’s legacy in the aftermath. The Reign of the Supermen animated film perfectly captures the unique part of Superman’s timeline in Batman: The Animated Series-styled animation from WB Animation studios. The movie releases on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on January 29. Suspriria (2018) Drastically changing directions here, but 2018 was a damn fine year for horror. Between Halloween, Hereditary, and Mandy, we were treated to some of the best nightmare fuel in a long time. However, if you want to see a movie as unsettling as Hereditary but mixed with a uniquely singular vision like Mandy, then the 2018 retelling of Suspiria is right up your alley! The reimagining of Dario Argento’s classic film stars Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson and is one of those movies that you’ll want to watch again to make sure you soaked in everything on screen. I won’t tell you more, but it’s both disturbing and wonderful. Check out the trailer above. Suspiria is available on Blu-ray and digital on January 29. Last Action Hero Last Action Hero didn’t get a whole lotta love back when it premiered in 1993, but if that was your last time watching this Schwarzenegger explosion fest, you need to give it another shot. Written by Zak Penn, who went on to write tons of big-budget superhero movies like Avengers and even last year’s Ready Player One, this movie is filled with excess, tongue-in-cheek humor and huge special effects. The new release is super bare bones with NO special features. But hey, it comes in a cool throwback VHS-style casing and upgrades this to HD on Blu-ray. Now available at only $7.50, it’s definitely worth adding to your collection for another look. Now Streaming Future Man (Season 2) Your streaming options are seemingly endless, but let me turn you on to this little gem called Future Man. A time travel odyssey that pokes fun at itself and other time travel films like Back to the Future, this series is a hilarious (and dirty) binge-worthy affair. The first season has Josh (played by Josh Hutcherson) running back through time after being recruited by future warriors to prevent mankind’s demise. Season 2 (now streaming on Hulu) sees the heroes trying to correct a different future timeline they mistakenly created. Dive into season 1 first, but then head right on into season 2. It’s so good, you’ll want to kiss someone on their rathole! You Might Also Like...
