Witness the Birth and Evolution of a Genius: Three Early Makoto Shinkai Films Land on Blu-ray June 16, 2022
We’ve already covered the phenomenal Weathering With You as part of our GKIDS retrospective, so if you’re interested in our thoughts on the film itself, click on over to that post. In short, every Makoto Shinkai film should be required, appointment viewing, and Weathering With You is no exception. Plus, it has one of the darkest, last-10-minutes-of-the-movie, I-did-NOT-see-that-coming twists we’ve seen in a long time. The film has been available digitally since August and on Blu-ray since September. However, out today from Shout! Factory and GKIDS is a collector’s edition set that might just hit the sweet spot – or be a perfect holiday gift – for superfans of the film and director Makoto Shinkai. The Blu-ray disc is the same that comes in the standard release, so you’re getting all the special features from that: 70-minute extended interview with director Makoto Shinkai (from a Japanese TV show) 24-minute featurette called “Weather Front” that features interviews with cast and crew Feature on Makoto Shinkai’s filmography (with clips from his previous films) Trailers and TV spots But what makes the 4-disc collector’s edition special is the packaging and additional features exclusive to this set. Most notable is a pristine 4K UHD presentation of the film on its own disc (along with a French audio track that’s not on the Blu-ray). Honestly, that might be what gets most people to buy in to this set. Packed inside the slipcase are all sorts of other goodies, though, including: 104-page booklet with key visuals; interviews with the cast, crew, and staff; illustrations (used in advertising and merchandising); preproduction materials; and a Q&A with Makoto Shinkai Feature-length (90-minute) Japanese documentary – The Making of Weathering With You – on its own disc Original soundtrack CD (composed by RADWIMPS) 13.25″ x 21.25″ mini-poster Decal sticker If you’re a fan of the film and didn’t already pick up the Blu-ray release, this is a great addition to your collection. I’m not usually a sucker for “gimmicky” features like mini-posters, stickers, and decals, but the CD soundtrack, making-of documentary, and beautiful booklet are all really nice additions. The making-of documentary, especially, is particularly insightful and well worth a watch. It’s a fascinating look inside the production process and really makes you appreciate everything that goes into making and promoting an animated film. (Hint: It’s a lot more than just drawing pictures.) If you haven’t seen the film? That’s a tough call. The film is gorgeous, stunning, and almost every other superlative you can think of… but the collector’s edition is fairly spendy. (It retails for $79.98.) It’s great that Shout! Factory has issued a 4K release (most of the films they release don’t get one), but this is the only way to get that version of the film. Meaning, if you just want the film in 4K, you need to suck it up and buy this set with a lot of stuff you may not want. You Might Also Like...
