EC Comics’ subversive and though-provoking classic comic book series Weird Fantasy will be headed to television soon, according to an annoucement from Hivemind. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the production company’s other exciting new projects: The Expanse (Amazon Studios), The Witcher adaptation starring Henry Cavill (Netflix), and producer Guillermo del Toro’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (CBS Films). Not a bad track record for a company that only began last year!

This, of course, isn’t the first time an EC Comics property has been brought to the small screen. HBO’s hit series Tales From the Crypt was another episodic series based on the comic book of the same name from publisher William M. Gaines. In addition to EC Comics from the 1950s, Gaines also published and contributed to MAD Magazine, breaking taboos and selling millions of copies along the way. Incidentally, the announcement from Hivemind also indicated a film production based on the life of Gaines is also in the pipeline.

Weird Fantasy is being billed as a sci-fi/fantasy series, and should the popularity of shows like Black Mirror be any indicator, it’ll find an accepting audience. The announced partnership between Hivemind and The William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. isn’t limited to just Weird Fantasy, however. So it’s possible we may be seeing more EC Comics properties in the future. The company’s press release quoted producer and Hivemind Co-President Dinesh Shamdasani as saying:

The EC library is a timeless literary achievement that deserves to stand alongside the works of Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, and H.P. Lovecraft. Weird Fantasy is a truly historic property that shattered many barriers, and our goal is to make the television series just as fearless and forward-thinking as the stories that inspired it.

Neither an air date nor a platform for the new series has been announced. Stay tuned to The Roarbots for future announcements.
