Miller struggles for control of The Investigator and tells Holden he may have found a way to save everyone stranded on Ilus. Murtry launches an attack on the Rocinante. Fayez decides things are rotten enough in the state of the Edward Israel to take action. Wei and Murtry go after Holden and Miller. Amos and Elvi go after Wei and Murtry. Alex makes a last, desperate bid to save both the Rocinante and the Barb.

Things I Love

  • Watching Thomas Jane play two characters who look exactly the same (with the exception of the hat) but who have distinct personalities is really a very remarkable thing. You’d never mistake Miller for The Investigator or vice versa.
  • This is the episode of one liners:
    • Miller to Holden: You ever met anyone you didn’t want to save?
    • Amos: Just because someone is good to you doesn’t mean you can trust them.
    • Miller: Just get in the hole.
    • Amos (after throwing the RCE man’s BFG): Is there something we still need to do?
    • Amos: Wei, I’m coming for your boss. Don’t be there when I do.
    • Amos to Okoye: You don’t need my permission.
    • Holden to Miller: No cop stories or tortured metaphors?
    • Holden to Miller: Rain is just water. It doesn’t really taste like anything.
    • Amos to Wei: I’m going after Holden. And if you’re in my way, I’m going through you.
    • Miller to Elvi: Fucked, lady. What I am is fucked.
    • Elvi to Miller: You’re really Detective Miller from Ceres?
      • Miller to Elvi: Yeah, I’m acing that Turing Test.
    • Holden to Murtry: I met another guy once who liked using past genocides to justify his bullshit.
      • Murtry: You weren’t persuaded?
      • Holden: A friend of mine shot him in the face.
    • Holden to Murtry: I’m going to bring you back to stand trial and drop you in a cell forever. We call that civilization.
  • There was a time Amos might have left Holden to the tender mercies of Wei and Murtry. Now, he’s willing to die to protect his Captain. Each new stage in their evolution from strangers to crew to their family is a thing of beauty.
  • Naomi Nagata, queen of perilous space rescues
  • The set design on this show has always been fantastic, but the underground protomolecule lair is… it’s just another level of incredible.
  • Elvi gets to have a chat with Miller.

Things I Didn’t Like

I have no complaints, though I would have really liked to see Elvi kick Murtry off the bridge and into the ultimate pit of darkness.

I Was Proud When

  • Elvi, a woman of science, makes a decision based on her faith in Holden. She knows him well enough at this point to know he’s a good man in a terrible situation and that he’s doing his best. That’s enough for her.
  • Lucia: No one else dies for this dream. Space is an insurmountable enemy. It forces the humans who live in it to become flexible if they want to survive – to give up their dreams in exchange for one more day to achieve them.

Next up is season 4’s final episode (410): “Cibola Burn”
