GBBP 158: Ed Asner

0

Today, we’re honored to be joined by a literal legend: Ed Asner. There’s really not much I can say about him that hasn’t been said, and there’s no introduction that does him justice.

Perhaps most well known for his role of Lou Grant on 12 seasons of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off Lou Grant, Asner is the most honored male performer in the history of the Emmy Awards. He’s won seven times. Modern (and younger) audiences might know him as the voice of Carl Fredericksen in Pixar’s Up. And that’s just scratching the surface.

What you might not know is that Asner is also a prolific author, and his most recent book takes on the U.S. Constitution. The Grouchy Historian: An Old-Time Lefty Defends Our Constitution Against Right-Wing Hypocrites and Nutjobs might reveal his political viewpoint, but it’s also perfectly indicative of his humor. Along with his coauthor, Ed. Weinberger (who also joins us on this episode), Asner re-examines and analyzes the Constitution for a modern audience who might not be fully aware of what it actually says – or of the historical context in which it was written.
