GBBP 205: S.A. Chakraborty

0

We’re traveling to Daevabad and the realm of the djinn this week with S.A. Chakraborty, author of the phenomenally great The City of Brass (and its forthcoming sequel, The Kingdom of Copper).

I’m not gonna lie; these books came out of nowhere for us and blew us away with how good they are. The City of Brass is Chakraborty’s debut novel, which began as self-described “history fanfic.” The book, which is the first of a trilogy, establishes and dives deep into a Muslim culture and magical Middle Eastern kingdom where magic is real and gods and demons are at war.

These books will suck you in, hold on tight, and not let go. In all the best ways possible.

On this episode, we talk about how Chakraborty “fell into” being an author, how much of her sprawling saga is based in historical fact and mythology, writing for a community that doesn’t have much representation in “mainstream” genre fiction, crafting side stories as a way of tackling writer’s block, and cooking elaborate medieval meals.
