When The Princess in Black first came out, I instantly knew my daughter would love it. She is decidedly not a “princess girl,” but the concept of a princess who uses her pink, frilly princess personality as a disguise and is really a super-awesome superhero who saves the kingdom from monsters was just too good to deny. Sure enough, it was an instant hit. (Check here for my take on the first book.) This week on the show, it’s a pleasure to bring you the husband-and-wife team that wrote the series: Shannon Hale and Dean Hale. Shannon is an incredibly prolific writer who’s covered serious literary ground from adult to YA to kid lit and back again. Dean is her partner in crime on the Princess in Black books from Candlewick Press. On the episode, we chat about the Princess in Black series (three books out now!), the collaborative writing process, and the unique challenges of working with your spouse. We also talk about why it’s so important, as a creative, to persevere through rejection, get perspective, and not to limit yourself with the ridiculous advice to “write what you know.” You can listen on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, TuneIn, Stitcher, and YouTube; you can follow the RSS feed; or you can listen right here! https://theroarbots.com/GBBShow/GBBShowE63.m4aPodcast: Play in new window | Download Connect: Kevin Kiner is online here.
