That’s why we decided to make a special effort to recognize the horror fans in our lives by picking out a few special items as part of our holiday gift guide.

Horrified

Horrified cooperative board game box

Universal Monsters fans rejoice! Not only is there a fantastic board game that faithfully delivers those famous monsters of Filmland, but it’s greatness goes beyond looks – it’s fun too! This cooperative tabletop board game plays with up to five players as they rescue villagers and defeat a slew of classic monsters like Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and more! With some gameplay elements that remind me a bit of Pandemic, Horrified is a bang-for-your-buck game with awesome miniatures and tons of replay value.

Silver Bullet Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

Silver Bullet Blu-ray cover

Why am I pitching you a movie from 1985 in 2019? Well, because the lovely folks over at Scream Factory have once again knocked it out of the park and just released a beautiful collector’s edition Blu-ray of one of the most underrated werewolf movies of all time. Silver Bullet is based off of Stephen King’s novelette Cycle of the Werewolf, and it’s about a town torn apart by a menacing werewolf in their midst.

Corey Haim, Megan Follows, and Gary FREAKING Busey all bring their A-game. While they look endearingly bad in 2019, the special effects in this movie are only a small part of what makes this one a cult classic. If the all-new cover art alone weren’t enough to win you over, then the new audio commentary by Martha De Laurentiis – along with some additional new interviews with select cast and crew – make this a worthwhile pickup. I missed this one back in the day and just saw it for the first time thanks to this Blu-ray, and I’m totally a fan. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Fangoria

Fangoria Vol. 2 #6 cover - VFW movie cover

We’re in a new golden age of horror, and in case you hadn’t heard, Fangoria is back! The world’s preeminent horror magazine returned in 2018 and is back with a vengeance. Now a thick, 100+ page quarterly magazine, Fangoria brings you the high-quality horror content you’d expect. Whether you’re into interviews with the latest auteurs such as Jordan Peele or Robert Eggers, cult icons like Joe Bob Briggs, or special effects masters, Fango has you covered.

Not to be read and tossed, these collector-quality issues are filled with stories on mainstream horror movies like It Part 2, new streaming content like Shudder’s Creepshow, and even under-the-radar weirdos like Knives and Skin. You’ll want to give these a mags place of honor on your bookshelf. I look forward to my own subscription every quarter, and the horror-lover in your life will undoubtedly do the same. Despite the sticker shock at a $79 annual subscription, it’s well worth it for the physical release, plus the access to exclusive digital content. Pick up your own subscription today!

Halloween VHS Throw Blanket

Halloween VHS cover blanket

Unless you want to burn a hole through your wallet, whatever you do, don’t browse Creepy Co.’s website willy-nilly. Everything they have is amazing (like this video store horror label rug, or this Bela Lugosi Dracula button-up shirt), but what you really need to keep warm this winter is the glorious Halloween VHS throw blanket above. They sell other horror-themed blankets, but if you really want Halloween at Christmas, then this horrific reminder of the murderous Michael Myers from the classic John Carpenter film is just the thing. Even though you have a cold heart and are probably already dead inside, there’s no better way to keep your meat suit warm this holiday season!

The Fly Blu-ray Collection

Every fan of classic horror has some version of the Universal monsters in their collection. I mean, we still get giddy when we pick up our 30-film box set of those classic baddies. But how many horror fans have a complete run of The Fly? Not many, I’d wager. Well, Scream Factory is here to help. This 5-disc box set includes The Fly (1958), Return of the Fly (1959), The Curse of the Fly (1965), The Fly (1986), and The Fly II (1989). Not only do you get Vincent Price and Jeff Goldblum in their primes, but you get Eric Stoltz! Eh? Eh? Fine. How about HOURS of special features for each film, including commentaries, interviews, and making-of featurettes? Shout/Scream Factory continue to do right by fans with each release, and this box set is perfect for fans of classic horror. And classic shirtless Goldblum.
