In a not-too-coincidental bit of timing, LEGO today announced the brand-new LEGO Star Wars BOOST Droid Commander set, which lets you build three of the franchise’s fan-favorite droids as fully interactive, moving, talking, awesome robots.

Of course R2-D2 is included, but LEGO threw us a curveball and graced us with the Gonk Droid and Mouse Droid instead of something a bit more obvious, like BB-8. And I, for one, am thrilled. The Gonk and Mouse Droids were always two of my favorite little droids, never quite getting the recognition they deserved.

So what is the BOOST Droid Commander set? If you’re unfamiliar with LEGO BOOST, it’s essentially a “beginner” version of LEGO Mindstorms for younger kids. It uses LEGO bricks and an app designed with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface (similar to Scratch) to teach coding and the basics of robotics to elementary-age (8+) kids.

This set also marks the first time the LEGO BOOST technology has been used with a Star Wars build.

The Droid Commander set will be available on September 1, 2019 (and will retail for $199.99), and comes packed with 1,177 pieces – enough to build all three robots. R2 and the Gonk Droid measure over 7″ high, and the Mouse Droid is over 5″ tall.

The set also includes a color and distance sensor, interactive motor, and Bluetooth-controlled Move Hub, which allows each droid to solve 40+ missions. Mission examples include

  • R2-D2
    • Plot a course
    • Receive and decode an incoming message
    • Party infiltration
    • Assisting flying an X-wing
  • GONK Droid
    • Arena Training
    • Work as a load lifter
    • Ready for the fighting pit
    • Power droids
  • Mouse Droid
    • Thrash sweep
    • Thrash dump
    • Message delivery
