LEGO Shatters Its Own Mold with the UCS Imperial Star Destroyer

0

Let’s just cut right to the chase, shall we? This brand-new Star Wars set in the Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) line is going to set you back a cool $700. There’s no way around that – that’s a serious chunk of change. And the only people lining up to plunk down $700 on LEGO are serious collectors (i.e., not parents looking for a cool set their kids can build on a lazy Saturday).

So what will your $700 entry ticket get you?

An absolutely massive Star Destroyer, that’s what. Modeled after the Devastator, which is the ship that stunned audiences in 1977 during the opening scene of the original Star Wars, this set includes 4,784 pieces and measures over 17″ high, 43″ long, and 26″ wide when fully built.

That’s more pieces than the LEGO Death Star. In fact, the only LEGO Star Wars sets with more pieces are two different versions of the Millennium Falcon. And unless I’m mistaken, this is the fifth largest (by piece count) LEGO set ever produced.

I mean, just look at the size of the BOX!

So yeah, it’s ridiculously big. And highly detailed. And totally nerdy.

But what else do you get? Uh, well, you get a grand total of TWO generic minifigures – an Imperial officer and an Imperial crewmember. And… well, that’s pretty much it.

Listen, I love Star Wars. And I love LEGO. Don’t misunderstand. But this set is $700 of mostly gray LEGO bricks and two no-name minifigs. And you’ll need a considerable amount of space to display the finished product. That’s a big ask of even the most dedicated fan.

To paraphrase Ian Malcolm, the Master Builders were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.

So do you need the UCS Imperial Star Destroyer? No. Don’t be ridiculous. No one NEEDS something like this. But do you WANT the UCS Imperial Star Destroyer?

Of course you do. Just don’t miss rent/mortgage because of it.

For those of you with the hefty LEGO bank accounts, it’ll be available October 1 (September 18 for LEGO VIP members).
