The Roarbots Holiday Gift Guide - stacks of wrapped presents

The eternal question: What to buy for the geek(s) in your life who seem to have everything? If you have a voracious reader, might we suggest taking a look at this gift guide for fiction and nonfiction titles or this one that features more off-the-beaten-track titles and geeky gift books.

But not everyone wants books. And even readers sometimes want something else that won’t make their to-read piles even more unwieldy. I mean, sure, you’ve got your reliable gift ideas like LEGO and Funko Pops, but there IS such a thing as TOO MUCH Funko and LEGO. Believe me.

So, here you go, The Roarbots’ 2019 ideas for random, awesome stuff the geek in your life is sure to love.

Batman Beyond: The Complete Series Blu-ray Box Set

It’s finally here. Batman Beyond: The Complete Series – all 3 seasons, 52 episodes, and 1 film – is available in a gorgeous, (mostly) fully remastered package. And trust me, kids, it’s stinkin’ beautiful. This new limited edition box set of the series comes with a number of goodies, including an exclusive Terry McGinnis Batman Funko Pop and four lenticular collector cards featuring original artwork. On top of the 52 episodes and the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker feature film, the 6 discs in this set are packed with a bunch of extras. There’s a ton of material to dig through, and it’ll give you a HUGE insight into the making of the show. (Check out our full review here.)

Scooby-Doo Where Are You!: The Complete Series Blu-ray Box Set

Scooby-Doo turned 50 this year, and believe it or not, the original show – Scooby-Doo Where Are You! – arrived on Blu-ray for the first time ever. That’s right! This is the first time the complete series, the original 25 episodes from 1969 plus an additional 16 that were added in 1978 as an anachronistic “third season” of the show, has been released in HD. And this box set is designed to look like a haunted house with artwork – including the Scooby gang set inside cut-out windows – that is practically perfect in every way. Scooby fans will find a lot to love here. And the original, classic show has never looked this good. (Check out our full review here.)

Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954-1975 (Criterion Collection)

This Godzilla-sized box set (seriously, the packaging is enormous; it looks like an oversized coffeetable book) collects for the first time the 15 Godzilla films from Japan’s Showa era (i.e., the first 15 films in the franchise), from 1954’s Godzilla to 1975’s Terror of Mechagodzilla. And since this is a Criterion release, you can rest assured that all 15 films have been given the deluxe, white-glove treatment. From new HD transfers, to oodles of special features, to an illustrated hardcover book that provides an in-depth look at the films and franchise, this is the perfect gift for any Godzilla or kaiju fan on your list. Honestly. I’m giving it myself this year.

Vizio 5.1 Channel Sound Bar

Don’t you want those new Blu-rays to sound their very best? Of course you do. We’ve had a 65″ TV in our family room for a YEAR, and I’ve been complaining about the sound quality for a YEAR since the speakers are on the back of the thing and are therefore directed straight into the wall. Design fail. Every time we sit down to watch a movie, I said, “We need to get a sound bar.” For an entire year. No more. Listen, as sexy as those Bose and Sonos sound bars might look, the average family and average home TV setup don’t demand them. You don’t NEED to spend a fortune on a sound bar, despite what those high-end products want you to think. We recently picked up this Vizio sound bar (from Costco, thank you very much), and it’s made a WORLD of difference to our home theater setup. I’m a Vizio convert. That 65″ TV? Vizio. The TV in my office? My computer monitor? Vizio. They make a darn good product. And they’re affordable. So instead of an $800 Sonos sound bar, you can spend $150 and get a whole 5.1 system. And I promise you, you won’t notice a difference when you’re hunkered into your couch watching Avengers: Endgame for the umpteenth time.

Transformers: TCG Energon Edition

This exclusive box set was created to commemorate the Transformers TCG’s first year. It not only includes two impossible-to-get characters (Slipstream and Cliffjumper, previously only available in the 2018 SDCC pack) but also four other rare and super-rare cards: Battlefield Legend Optimus Prime, Living Weapon Megatron, Legendary Warrior Bumblebee, and Dark Clone Nemesis Prime. Each of the cards will be printed on heavy plastic and be fully to semitransparent with foil accents. You’ll also get eight rare battle cards emblazoned with foil, 30 Wave 1 booster packs (in case you need to try and fill some holes in your Wave 1 collection), and my favorite part: 18 Energon Dice. I’ve been using dice to track health for a while now, and having transparent blue dice that look like little Energon cubes will be a nice upgrade. It’s an incredible gift for any TF:TCG fan and you can only get it from the Wizards of the Coast website on 12/2 for $199 a set.

Disney+ Subscription

Begun, the streaming wars have. I’m not going to beat around the bush here. Disney+ is worth it for The Mandalorian alone. But it’s so much more than that. From a back catalog stretching back almost a full century to brand-new originals shows and films, getting or gifting a Disney+ subscription is kind of a no-brainer. That it’s only $4.99/month makes it even more so. If you have or know someone with kids, this is probably the only streaming service you need. From classic (and many not-s0-classic) Disney animated and live-action films, to the height of the Disney Afternoon, to the entire Pixar filmography, to a majority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to the entire Star Wars saga… not to mention brilliant National Geographic documentaries, animated Marvel shows, and modern Disney Channel and Disney XD series, there’s a lifetime’s worth of viewing – and memories – on tap for instant streaming.

Beasts of the Mesozoic Raptor

Creative Beasts has created jaw-droppingly accurate dinosaur figures with their Beasts of the Mesozoic line. While they just wrapped up an extremely successful Kickstarter, they got started by making raptors. These feathery, death-dealing dinos are incredibly accurate and vibrantly painted. Inspiration was taken from brilliant modern-day birds. The result is nothing short of stunning. Instead of seeing dinosaurs as dead beasts, they come to life and are easily imaginable in real-world environments. The articulation is off the charts, and each comes with a display base for posing. If you have a dinosaur fan on your list, they need one of these figs.

Underworld DRIFT Series 1

If you’ve seen Trainspotting, you know Underworld. Their track “Born Slippy” (along with a few other key tunes) helped define the sound of that film and launched the UK duo onto the main stage. In the years since,  they haven’t faded away or slowed down. And if you’re a fan of EDM, I’m not telling you anything you don’t know. In fact, last year, they found themselves in the middle of an audacious, ambitious project lesser musicians wouldn’t even dream of. On November 1, 2018, Underworld released “Another Silent Way” with a promise to release music every Thursday for an entire year. That project was known as DRIFT, and Series 1 collects all 52 weeks of music and films born from that mad drive to create. You can get the music digitally, but they’ve also released a 7 CD (yes, CDs!) box set that includes a Blu-ray of all the films and an 80-page book that documents the year’s work. Also available is a single CD or a 2 LP Sampler Edition. (Check out this “unboxing” to see how gorgeous this set is.)

Geek-Friendly Ugly Christmas Sweaters

Online retailer Merchoid has some of the best (i.e., ugliest) geeky Christmas sweaters I’ve ever seen. They’re so hideous that I need to own all of them. They’ve got designs for the Star Wars, Marvel, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, DC Comics, and Disney fans in your life, and I promise you that your geeky gift-givee doesn’t have one of these. This is your chance to be a holiday gift-giving god! Don’t miss out. I won’t lie; they’re not cheap. But when has holiday perfection ever been cheap?

Transformers Omega Supreme

An imposing two feet tall (just like Fortress Maximus before him), Omega Supreme cuts an imposing figure, with a design that’s so G1, it wasn’t until I noticed all that beautiful articulation that I realized I was looking at a new figure. His alt-mode is an impressive homage to the original’s tank, rocket, and base configuration. It’s something designers haven’t been able to do in any of his modern iterations. He even comes with a Micromaster, Countdown (who had his own Micromaster rocket base in G1). It’ll look great facing off against Scorponok, coming next year, and Omega Supreme is the ultimate gift for any Transformers fan. It’s $159 on Amazon, but keep an eye out for Black Friday sales. Last year’s Titan-class figure, Trypticon, saw huge discounts on BF.

Transformers Cyberverse

Transformers Cyberverse continues to be crazy fun and wonderfully collectible. Not only does Hasbro keep churning out figures that look exactly like their on-screen counterparts, they’re also willing to dive deep into all aspects of Transformers mythology for inspiration. So far this year, we’ve gotten an Optimus Prime that’s wearing the Ark, a Grimlock with armor based on an obscure Transformers Animated character, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Action Attackers Bumblebee and Soundwave are both impressive examples of screen-accurate, but still completely playtime-worthy, toys. With prices that range from $30 to $14, they’re also easy on the wallet.
