Last week, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast debuted the brand-new Mythic Edition release for Magic: The Gathering‘s 80th expansion set, Ravnica Allegiance, exclusively on eBay. I’m always hyped for a new Magic release, but even more so when eBay graciously offer to send The Roarbots a set for review from the Hasbro and WoTC eBay store! Therefore, in case you weren’t able to nab one yourself, I hope some of you can live vicariously through me as I unbox this sexiness.

“Yo Dawg! I heard you like boxes, so I put your box in a box in a box!

Since it came drop-shipped directly from eBay, I’ll spare you the standard cardboard mailer picture, but it’s in my video down below if you’re really interested. It’s not really a secret what you’ll get from this set, but seeing how it’s packaged really gets you in the mood. Here’s a peek inside:

The inside suggests a premium drafting experience to the player. If your draft pool has eight players, each person will be guaranteed a limited edition foil Masterpiece Planeswalker card to construct a killer deck around. The actual Masterpiece packs have which Planeswalker is inside printed under the flap, so you’ll have to make sure not to sneak a peek before randomly distributing to keep things fair. Also, you’ll still get your standard foils and rares in these packs.

I know…i’t’s upside down. Don’t @ me.

The decorative box (with resealable velcro tab) opens to reveal…another box! Just kidding! No, you get your eight premium Masterpiece packs and 16 booster packs. Revel in their glory:

Now, what you’re probably eagerly anticipating isn’t the fine decorative packaging, but what’s inside. Before we dive into the Masterpiece pack, let’s take a quick look at what’s randomly inside a sample pack (your mileage may vary!):

M:tG may have been doing this a while, but it’s still cool to see there are no wasted cards in this 15-card pack – specifically no standard mana cards in my booster pack. You’ll still get your usual mix of commons, uncommons, and rares. The packs remain balanced with a good mix of creatures, artifacts, instants, and more. Let’s get to why you came here: the Masterpiece pack:

Like I said earlier, with the Masterpiece pack marked, it was no surprise that I was going to get a premium FULL BLEED foil Karn, Scion of Urza, but it was still thrilling to see it in it’s full glory. The Legendary Planeswalker instantly makes me start thinking about what cards I should use to build my deck around him.

I know the full bleed artwork is meant to make the card stand out from the rest (and it does), but I wouldn’t be sad if future sets included 100% of the cards with full bleed artwork, legacy be darned. Another nice thing about the Masterpiece pack is the premium card is an added bonus. You still get 15 “regular” cards in your pack to keep things even in your draft.

I’m sure some folks are going to buy the Ravnica Allegiance Mythic Edition solely for collectible purposes, but I think you’d be missing out from a unique experience that doesn’t come around too often. Even if you split the cost evenly with seven other people for a draft experience, you could easily make your money back (or more) on the secondary market. To quote the inimitable Wayne Campbell from Wayne’s World, “If you have the means, I highly recommend it.” At the publishing of this article, just over 2,000 of these sets have sold. There’s a good chance you can probably pick one up yourself in Hasbro’s official eBay store.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures, but if you want to better experience the unboxing, check out my video below:
